60x60 Spotting Scope
Is buying a cheap telescope a waste of money?
I'm talking about the bottom of the barrel, under $100, 20-60x60 spotting scopes. I'm really only interested in you answer if you have one of these scopes and can compare it to a good scope (~$800). For example, is the color washed out? Is the light blocked by too many lenses so a dark image appears? Is the image seemingly out of focus? Or, Is the picture sharp, clear, etc.? I already have a good scope but want another one but am not in the market to buy a "real" scope. Thanks for you answers. I appreciate it.
Wow, I guess everyone ASSUMES I'm looking at the sky. I'm just surprised that's all. But I'm actually looking for a refractor scope for viewing wildlife. Thanks to everyone who already answered.
The worst factor is flimsiness. You can't use high magnification with a dancing image. You can't see faint objects or fine detail with a small aperture. You can't use high magnification with a poor eyepiece or just a fair objective lens or mirror.
If you buy a poor telescope, you will be helping the distributor and the maker a little bit. But is that worthwhile? Not to me.
I have a couple of 60mm to 114mm "department store" quality ones I have modified to be steadier, and to use better eye lenses. The images are pretty good for their costs and sizes and quality. They are handy to use for quick setups, dumping in the van, showing some kids at school field events, public park, etc.
