7x50 Binocular
What kind of Binocular would I need?
I am actually a beginner, and I want to know that what kind of binocular or telescope do I need for me to see the galaxies, stars, and the planets (and their moons). I heard something like 10x50 Binocular is a good one, also the 7x10 or was it 7x50. Well im not really sure. So please please help me on finding the right one for myself. I want one that is good, not like i buy the Binoculars for say $500 and it doesn't even work. It should be worth it.
Thanks!!
7x10s would be a bad choice - far too small, but it is likely that you really mean 7x50s which are one of the standard sizes for astronomy. 7x50s make almost optimal use of the available light for young people under dark skies, but under less than ideal conditions a pair of 7x10s or a smaller and cheaper pair of 8x42s may be a better option. The first number gives the magnification and the second the aperture of the objective lens - this tells you how much light they collects and thus how faint an object you can see.
Binos are the kind of thing where you can spend as much or as little as you like and to a large extent you get what you pay for. More expensive binos are likely to feature better optics and be more robust - while no binos will like being dropped some of the cheaper models are unable to cope with everyday knocks or even being put down firmly.
You are advised not to be too ambitious in terms of magnification. Any shaking of your hands is magnified in the views through the binos limiting how much you can see. Anything over about 10x really needs mounting but personally I have never been keen on that idea - when you start talking about Bino mounts you have most of the hassle of setting up a telescope but much less light grab and power. The other option is image stabilised binos - I have a pair of images stabilised 12x36s and they are great, but comparatively expensive - you could probably buy a 10 or 12" Dob for the price I paid for those.
Things to look for:
Fully coated: cuts down internal reflections inside the binos that gives dimmer images. Fully multi-coated is even better. Binos simply described as "coated" are probably best avoided since it usually means only the outer surfaces are treated.
Tripod mounting bush: although I don't like bino mounts there is no reason to get binos that don't fit to them.
Porro prisms (where the objective lenses are wider that the eyepieces): these give better views for astronomy than the in-line Roof Prism binos, at least unless we are talking about very high end binos.
Lens caps and a rigid case: anything that protects your binos when not in use is a good idea.
BaK-4 optical glass (at least at the lower end of the market): this performs better than BK-7 glass used in some models. Avoid any cheap models that don't tell you what glass they use since it may not be even that. However, going up market (in the hundreds of dollars territory) they may not say as they begin to adopt proprietary glasses.
Would binoculars win over a cheap telescope?
I recently bought a cheap ($50) Meade 50mm refractor scope at Target and knew that it most likely wouldn't amount to much. The Moon is interesting in it but I'd really like to see Saturn and Jupiter but my scope only has them appear as blurred balls of light at best. Would a pair of 7x50 binoculars give me a better image? I'd even be willing to go up to 15x70 (because I'd like to see some deep space images if possible with them).
Absolutely. All of my amateur astronomy friends have binoculars, but none of them have $50 scopes. I used binoculars for years prior to investing in a good scope. The best binoculars for astronomy are usually 7 x 50 or 10 X 50. You don't want them to get heavy. They will not provide very good detail on deep sky objects, regardless of what binoculars you buy, but you will be able to at least see several clusters, nebulae, and even a couple of galaxies. If you do buy a larger binocular, you might want a tripod to go with it. By the time you do that, you are probably just as well off going for an 8 inch Dob.
Your current scope would make a decorative plant stand.
ADDED: If you want detailed planetary views, you will need to buy a scope (one that costs at least $200). But there's a huge variety of deep sky objects that can be seen with decent binoculars. They will also really help you to learn the night sky - which is half the fun.
